2023 City Awake | Volunteer Day - The Greater Boston Food Bank
A new year brings new opportunities! Take some time to give back to the community with City Awake at the Greater Boston Food Bank!
The Greater Boston Food Bank plays a large part in fighting hunger in Massachusetts. Daily, GBFB acquires large amounts of food from donations and food industry partners. From there, they sort and store many pounds of food in their 117,000 square foot facility with the help of various volunteers and workers. This food will eventually make its way to the many communities of families who rely on this fresh produce to fuel them in their everyday lives.
- All staff, visitors, and volunteers answer nine screening questions before entering the facility. Answers are not recorded. The questions can be found here: https://gbfb.tfaforms.net/f/screening We ask you complete the survey on the morning of your scheduled volunteer shift.
- Volunteers are required to use a cloth face covering, as recommended by the CDC.
- Handwashing is required before starting the volunteer activity and at the conclusion of their shift.
- Disposable gloves must be worn during the volunteer shift. Gloves are provided by GBFB.
- Always maintain a 6 ft. physical distance from others.
- Group size is limited to 15 or fewer people per shift.
- Hand sanitizer is available onsite.
- Workstations are sanitized and disinfected at the beginning and end of each volunteer shift.
- Closed-toe shoes are required.
- Parking is available in the gated lot located diagonally across the street from the main entrance. Cars must be removed by close of business at 4:30pm. All remaining vehicles risk being towed at the owners' expense.
Neighborhood Safety Precautions:
GBFB takes the safety of our staff and volunteers very seriously. Due to the escalation in crime and social unrest in the neighborhood where The Greater Boston Food Bank facility is located, we want to be sure you are fully aware of your environment as you consider participating as a volunteer at our facility.
GBFB is taking necessary steps to enhance security given conditions in our neighborhood. GBFB has increased additional on-site security guards and has installed a safety gate in the parking lot.
Guidance on visiting building:
o GBFB is located near the Mass and Cass area (intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard). Please be aware of your surroundings when visiting our facility. Avoid Atkinson Street and Topeka Street if possible. At this time, Moore Street is a preferred access route to reach South Bay Avenue.
o Please do not linger outside the building or engage with individuals on the streets surrounding our facility.
o If in need of help while on GBFB property, please dial 7 from any GBFB landline phone or call 781-571-2979 from any other phone to reach a security guard on duty. Or call 911.
